Sneak Peek: Beijing Girl by Zhong Chen

Eva Breuer Art Dealer would like to offer you a sneak peek of our new show Beijing Girl by Zhong Chen. The canvases were hung today in preparation for the opening on Wednesday August 5th from 6-8PM. Both change and continuity are evident in this new work – while Chen’s approach has evolved to bold, gestural canvases, beyond the pixel paintings that brought him his earliest recognition, he has continued to work in the portrait and landscape genres and to explore historical and contemporary aspects of Chinese culture.

Artist Spotlight: Tony Irving

Eva Breuer Art Dealer is proud to spotlight the work of contemporary artist Tony Irving this week. His show titled Other places, other views is opening on Saturday 12th of September with drinks from 3-5PM.

Who (or what) do you consider your artistic inspiration?

I'm inspired by the world around and the way people behave, whether in an inner-city lane in Sydney or Melbourne, or a piazza in Lucca in Italy.

Do you listen to music while you work, and if so, what is most often playing?

I play a lot Tom Waits but I also enjoy Baroque music and sometimes Fats Waller (when everything is going according to plan).

Who of your peers do you respect the most?

I admire any artist who can stay true to their ideals and continue to explore and develop their work.

The artist in his studio.

Do you have any habits/rituals or strange superstitions when painting?

I like to start the day with a completely clean palate and clean brushes.

When did you decide to become an artist?

I've never really thought of being anything else but an artist.

What is your favourite colour?

For me colour is all about the balance between many colours.

Do you have a favourite painting or work of art? If so, what is it?

I love Canaletto's Campo Santa Maria Formosa - it's so rich with figures and animals, detail and incident, and a wonderful composition as well. It sums up everything i would want to achieve in my own work.

Brett Whiteley created some of the most important paintings of twentieth century Australian Art. Of his 1970's masterpieces the bird paintings are among the most beautiful. The current work was purchased through Robin Gibson Gallery where Whiteley exhibited his birds in 1979 to great acclaim. The painting has only ever been in one collection. Three of Brett Whiteley's most memorable solo exhibitions were devoted to the theme in 1979, 1983, 1988. The bird paintings follow on from Whiteley's time in New York, a very difficult period marked by the culmination of Alchemy 1973, Whiteley's monumental masterpiece which almost overwhelmed him in the attempt. They were completed around 1978 when he became the first and only artist to win all three of the Art Gallery of New South Wales prestigious painting prizes; the Archibald, the Wynne and the Sulman.

Brett Whiteley is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, many regional galleries, as well as many important public collections both in Australia and overseas including the Tate Gallery London.

Artist Spotlight: Song Ling

This week, Eva Breuer Art Dealer, would like to highlight Song Ling in our artist spotlight. According to Ling, "I like to use symbolic imagery from traditional culture in my work as there are many layers of meaning for me. But with these new paintings I am not just looking for symbolism and meaning, but also concentrating on the aesthetic to create paintings of beauty.

With this series of works I am seeking to represent the Childhood images, Chinese Zen style traditional ink and brush paintings and Asian comic characters in a new way; to give an ancient and pop image a contemporary look, to bring the symbol into a new technological context.

The modern printing process and digital technologies use the dot to produces images. I use a hand-painted dot to create my works.

The colours I use are often found in Chinese folk art and embroidery; I choose colours which have the strongest contrast to create tension in the work. Old technique versus new technique, traditional versus modern; color versus color. But still, I want to create paintings of beauty."
