Focus on Ray Crooke

Ray Crooke (b. 1922)
Tahiti c.1962
oil on canvas
74 x 100 cm
signed 'R Crooke' lower left
Provenance: Private collection Sydney
no.10529

This very good early 1960's work typifies Crooke's mastery in depicting the density of the lush, green landscape of Australia's tropical north and beyond to Thursday Island, Tahiti and Fiji. Around the time this painting was completed Crooke returned to Cairns to paint full-time, living in the picturesque beach village Yorkeys Knob.

Crooke's broad-leafed tropical vistas in vivid colours and contrasted areas of light and dark, often likened to Gauguin, are among the most important in Australian landscape painting. Both Gauguin and Crooke shared the experience of Island life. Crooke captures the 'essence of Island life, a place where the pattern of life is simple... where there is an innocence of the complexity of life.'

Ray Crooke is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries many regional galleries as well as many other public collections throughout Australia and overseas. He was won numerous coveted awards including 1969 Archibald Prize for his portrait of journalist and novelist George Johnston.

Press Release: Judy Cassab & John Seed

Judy Cassab (b.1920) & John Seed (b.1945)
The Two of Us
To be opened by the Hon. Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG
On Wednesday 30 September 2009, 6-8PM

Eva Breuer Art Dealer is proud to announce the opening of The Two of Us, the first exhibition to pair Judy Cassab with her son, John Seed. Within a few short years of arriving in post-war Sydney with her family in 1951, Judy Cassab became Australia's most celebrated portrait painter winning numerous prizes including the Archibald and the Australian Women’s Weekly Portrait Prize. John, a sculptor has carried on her great artistic legacy with exhibitions at the Bonython and Holdsworth galleries in the 1960s and 1970s as well as at the Centre Prize Gallery in London, at that time exhibiting under the name John Kampfner.

Judy has always been fascinated by personal narratives – from her own teeming journals made public in Judy Cassab Diaries (1995) to the portraits she sows with the stories of her sitters. In Lou Klepac’s monograph on Judy from 1998, she explains her artistic process;

'I am passionately interested in people’s childhood, why they choose the path they are on…In our age of the short attention span, the only other place where one could talk about these things is the psychiatrist’s couch.’

It is fitting then that The Two of Us will explore one of Judy’s most intimate relationships, that with her son. Today, at 89 years of age, Judy spends many of her days at John’s studio, sketching him at work with his welding tools and steel sculptures. John laments that he is not a more figurative artist as he cannot return the favour and sculpt his famed mother. Yet they share many wonderful likenesses in their work – from the exotic present in Cassab’s Sphinx with Girl 2008 and Seed’s Hindu Yantras to the abstracted Australian landscape which both mother and son explore with a shared fervour.

The Two of Us will be opened by the Hon. Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG on Wednesday 30 September 2009. The exhibition will continue until Tuesday 13 October and will include many of Judy’s iconic paintings from 1955 until 2008, including Mother Holding Child 1995, a depiction of the unique and cherished relationship between mother and son.

Arthur Boyd is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, many regional galleries, as well as many other important public collections in Australia and overseas. Born into a lineage of gifted painters, potters, musicians and architects, Arthur Boyd became the most celebrated member, in Australia’s cultural history, of that revered artistic family.

Two Angels with Black Hair 1964 is a powerful, dream-like image. Boyd’s use of the delicate pastel contrasts with the dramatic struggle of the two angel’s frozen in mid motion across the page.

Arthur Boyd’s work of the 1960s is characterised by a great focus on experimentation with alternative media such as pastel. Perhaps Boyd’s greatest achievement in pastel are the series of works based on Italy’s most revered Saint, St Francis of Assisi, which were produced in this period following his move to London. St Francis is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment. St Francis has been an important subject throughout art history and in 1963, prior to his visit to Umbria, Boyd looked at the St Francis paintings by the old master Sassetta at the National Gallery, London. In the summer of 1964, he and his family travelled to Italy, visiting the town of Gubbio where St Francis is said to have tamed the dangerous local wolfe. In the autumn of the same year, Boyd produced pastel images of the 'Wolf of Gubbio'.

The St Francis series are a major body of work, examples of which are included in all major public galleries in Australia. The series includes lithographs, paintings, pastels and tapestry. In 1975 the Australian National Gallery purchased twenty tapestries including from the St Francis series, some of which were subsequently used in the re-furnishing of Yarralumla, the Governor-General’s residence in Canberra. In 1968 Boyd made sixteen lithographs which were made into a book with TSR Boase and published by Thames and Hudson. Maragret Pont’s Arthur Boyd and Saint Francis of Assisi 1964-1974 was published by Macmillain in 2004.

James Gleeson's passing in 2008 marked the end of one of the greatest careers in Australian Art. Gleeson leaves behind one of the most important bodies of work ever produced by an Austraian artist. His devotion to, and mastery of Surrealism spanning the 1930's to the late 1990's remains an important record of not only his work but that of the Surrealist genre. Gleeson played a significant role in the Australian art world, not only as a painter and poet, but as a critic, writer and curator. Gleeson combined a great intelligence with skillful draughtsmanship and great facility in handling paint. Delving into the subconscious, Gleeson used literary, mythological or religious subject matter to allow the viewer glimpses of extraordinary beauty. The Monuments 1990 is a large work from the late period which convey a sumptuous monumentality.

Gleeson is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, most regional galleries, university collections, Artbank, and many corporate and private collections.
